this Decorative Painter project brings new life to that boring old kids' room in the basement

cloudy sky
 

supplies
• latex paint
• medium blue, white, yellow, black
• 2" bursh, 1" brush, and small brushes
• water

how to
• begin with a white base coat (may need to prime), mix blue paint with a little water
• with 2" brush apply blue wash in random circular strokes, apply more blue on the upper portion of the wasll to create a depth
• mix white wash the same as the blue, create clouds with bumps using a 1" brush (small at the bottom, larger at the top), fill in clouds with small circular strokes
• mix yellow wash the same as the white (you only need a little bit), highlight under the bumps in the clouds with a small brush, blend with the 1" brush
• highlight the yellow and the top bumps of the clouds with white wash and blend with 1" brush
• paint simple birds with black paint and a thin brush (optional)

stick people
   

supplies
• wall paint in sky blue and grass green
• assorted craft paints (including black)
• brushes (including artist brushes), level, pencil, eraser

how to
• use these stick people as a reference or design your own (they're stick people after all)
• draw people in different positions on a test paper, create your own world
• for the play structure, use a level to pencil draw the platforms and posts (do the same for buildings)
• add the stick people, stick dog, stick cat, etc.
• paint in the faces frist, let dry (may need two coats)
• paint the clothing and other things like a football, skateboard, hoola hoop, etc.
draw the facial expressions and outline everything in black

school house blackboard
 

supplies
• blackboard paint, primer, semi-gloss white latex
• 2 ½" trim, miter saw, finishing nails, filler, measuring tape, pencil
• smooth surface roller, paint tray

how to
• paint trim, cut 2 trim equal lengths, miter this cut to form a peak at the center of the wall, cut 2 trim for the sides of the house (measurements depend on the size desired and available space)
• nail trim to the wall, slink nails and fill holes
• transfer school house pattern onto the wall with a pencil line, roll blackboard paint (may need two coats)
• leave to dry
(note: blackboard paint is available in black and green)

clothes pin valence
 

supplies
• assorted fabrics, foam core, spray adhesive
• sharp blade and cutting surface
• clothes pins, rope or heavy string, 2 hooks

how to
• spray adhesive to foam core, place fabric and press down
• draw shirts and shorts, cut with blade
• attach the hooks to the top corners of the window
• hang rope across the top of the window, hang clothes to rope using clothes pins
(notes: because the room has a low ceiling I cut the clothes pins down in size to fit / choose fabrics with small patterns because these are small clothes)

light/plug plate
 

supplies
• light or plug plates, gesso, sand paper, sponge sticks
• matching top coat paint, primer

how to
• sand plates, wipe clean, cover with gesso, repeat after it dries
• apply primer to plates
• repeat with matching top coat paint, decorate to coordinate with the room
